Big Catch, Bigger Heart
In January 2025, during the 20th Annual Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby, 8-year-old Kohen Daigle from Madawaska proved that the true spirit of the event goes far beyond the ice.
Kohen reeled in a massive 22-pound, 8-ounce muskie measuring 44 inches—securing third place in the youth category and an $800 prize. But when the moment came to claim his winnings at the awards ceremony, Kohen did something unforgettable: he announced he wanted to donate every dollar back to the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund, the heartfelt charity supported by the derby.
“I decided that when I was talking to my mom and dad about it at the table at the restaurant,” Kohen later shared. “Then I went up there and told them that I want to donate my money.”
The gesture brought tears to the eyes of derby organizers and warmed the entire community. It wasn’t a surprise to those who know him—Kohen’s mom, Tiffani Daigle, describes him as having “an old soul and a kind heart.” The Cancer Fund holds deep meaning for the family; Kohen’s grandfather (“Pepere Alan”) passed away from brain cancer at a young age, and the fund had supported them with travel costs and more during that difficult time.
Kohen’s selflessness inspired an outpouring of gratitude. People from near and far reached out, sending him gift cards, new fishing gear, and messages of admiration. His story quickly made local headlines, reminding everyone why the Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby is about so much more than big fish—it’s about community, compassion, and giving back.
Kohen’s act set a new standard for sportsmanship and generosity at the derby—a true “Record Heart” moment we’ll remember for years to come. Moments like this are what make our event special: celebrating not just record catches, but the incredible people who make our community shine.
Thank you, Kohen, for showing us all what it means to fish with heart.
