Generous Spirits in Action
The community’s support of the Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby is evident in our steadfast winter tradition. At this year’s annual donation event, the Derby organizers proudly continued their support for the St. John Valley residents with a meaningful contribution to the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund.
In 2024, the commitment of our community is reflected in the photograph of Derby Representative Jake Bernier with key members of the Northern Maine Medical Center. Contributions totaling more than $120,000 collected over the years are a testament to a community united for a cause that goes beyond the thrill of the catch.
Beyond the Derby
The Derby’s contributions resonate beyond the lake’s frozen expanse, harmonizing with the essential mission of the Fund— a symbol of hope since 1978. The Fund’s extensive support of over $1.4 million to more than 1,600 families has cast a wide net of care. Beyond financial help, the Fund also provides educational resources, support groups, and an abundant resource library, ensuring that no family facing cancer feels alone.
This commitment is amplified by the enthusiasm and engagement of our dedicated anglers and organizers, notably demonstrated by the early fulfillment of our pledge for the NMMC building expansion campaign.
Looking Ahead
Each year, as we drop our lines into the icy depths, we partake in more than just Maine’s Largest Ice Fishing Derby; we honor a community known for its heartfelt compassion and unwavering strength. With the landmark 20th anniversary of the Derby approaching on January 25-26, 2025, we are eager to enhance our support for the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund with events that extend beyond the ice.
Your participation in the Derby forges a crucial support network for our neighbors when it’s needed most. We invite you to continue this legacy where every catch contributes to a more significant endeavor, and every shared moment on the ice reinforces our collective resolve.
We warmly invite you to partake in marking two decades of the Derby, a celebration where fishing lines become threads of connection, and the icy expanse of Long Lake reflects our shared commitment and warmth.
